Introduce Students to the Five Regions of the United States
The first step is to introduce your students to the concept of regions. Explain that a region is an area of land with certain characteristics, such as climate, natural resources, or culture.
Instead of teaching my students directly about each region, I want them to read and learn about them either with a partner or independently. These passages are perfect for this task and help them use close reading skills as they learn.

Show Students Maps of the Regions of the United States
Now that your students have a general understanding of regions, it’s time to show them some maps! I like to show them a map of the entire United States. As we look at the map, I ask them questions such as:
- What do you notice about this map?
- What are some of the features that you see?
- What do you think is the purpose of this map?
After we have looked at the map of the United States as a whole, I show them maps of each region. We discuss the characteristics of each region and how they are similar to or different from other regions. I also point out some of each region’s major cities and landmarks.

Finally, we wrap up our lesson by looking at a map showing all the regions. I ask my students to identify the region in which they live. We also talk about how the regions are connected and how people can travel from one region to another.
Teaching students about these five areas of the United States is a great way to help them learn more about their country. By using maps, you can visually represent the regions that will help your students better understand and remember the information. Plus, it’s just plain fun! Who doesn’t love looking at maps?
Labeling Maps of the Regions of the United States
As they are learning, I give them maps for each region. I start by having them label the states in each region. Within each region’s passage is a map that they can use for reference.

Then we discuss the other region features that they learned from their reading.
After reading about that regions, they can add facts to the boxes on their maps like this:

This is just a quick overview of how you can use maps to teach your students about the five regions of the United States.
