Kids LOVE Valentine’s Day! Passing out their Valentine cards and treats to classmates is almost better than Christmas or Hanukkah. The build up to the day – and then the day itself – is so full of excitement and LOVE! It’s almost overwhelming for teachers.
It also presents a problem for teachers who are trying to let their students enjoy the Valentine spirit, but also keep them focused and learning. Can you relate?
I’ve got the perfect solution to this problem – Valentine’s Day Math Activities using this Valentine’s Day Word Problems Error Analysis Print and Digital Resource.
February is the perfect time of year for 3rd grade students to practice multiplication and division with word problems.
They need to dive in deeper than memorizing facts. They need rigor.
Add error analysis to that – you will increase engagement which is especially important when they are distracted by holiday activities!

The Process
1. Students are given multiplication word problems that contain an error.
(There are division problems too!)
2. Using math models, students will build the problem as given.
3. They determine if the word problem is true or false.
4. They write to explain how they found their answer using math vocabulary.
Digital Version
The digital version looks very similar. I have included heart manipulatives for students to use to build arrays or equal groups.
So, whether your students are learning in person or from home – they can have the same assignment.
