Settlement Patterns in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean

You wouldn’t expect your students to love to learn about Settlement Patterns in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean – would you? It sounds kind of….. boring. But – they LOVE to learn about the world around them! This unit has so many different cultures and geography that they really enjoy it!

The standard for 3rd grade is:

SS.3.G.4.1: Explain how the environment influences settlement patterns in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

First of all. Your students will probably love learning about how people have settled in these countries. It’s new knowledge and it’s kind of interesting. Sometimes I’m surprised at what my students find interesting, but trust me – they will like this.

Second. You will be combining Social Studies content and reading skills which are perfect for 3rd graders – who need lots of practice!

Introducing the Topic

Giving students a basic idea of general settlement patterns begins with a passage called, Where People Build Settlements. This will help students begin to understand this new concept. It is also where they will begin to use the following close reading strategies in order to comprehend the text.

1st Read:

1. Note-taking

2. “Getting the Gist” – Summarizing

Aligned to the standard, the focus is on how the environment affected these settlements.

Whole group:

Guided Reading Groups:

Day 1 – 2: 1st read of one passage, taking notes, decoding unknown words, defining vocabulary, and writing a summary.

Day 3 – 4: 2nd read of the passage, respond to the text-based questions, assist students in learning how to answer in complete sentences and citing text evidence, and completing the graphic organizer.

Repeat with each passage.
