Fractions Game Show for 3rd Grade

Learning fractions is hard! There are so many fractions standards for 3rd grade that it can get a little overwhelming for you and your students. This is why I love using this Fractions Game Show during and after my fractions unit. It brings relief from normal practice activities and injects a little math fun for students. 

How the Fractions Game Show Works

If you are not familiar with Jeopardy-style games, here’s a quick overview. The board is comprised of 5 categories with 5 questions in each. The questions are given a value of 100 – 500 points. Students can choose any category or point value, and the goal is to have the most points by the end of the game. (when all of the questions have been asked)

Fractions Game Show: Category 1 – Unit Fractions

The questions in this category have students identifying unit fractions. It’s a good starting place in the game and will help them warm up for more challenging content in the other categories!

Fractions Game Show: Category 2 – Parts of a Whole

Students will respond to questions about how many parts are shaded given a fraction bar, square, or circle. For example, they will be given a fraction and asked how many parts are shaded out of the total. This helps them practice what a numerator represents and what a denominator means in a fraction math model.

Fractions Game Show: Category 3 – Fractions on a Number Line

This category focuses on fractions on a number line. It includes identifying which fractions are located on a number line and identifying points on a number line.

Fractions Game Show: Category 4 – Equivalent Fractions

Knowing which fractions are equivalent is an essential part of learning fractions, so this category allows students to practice this using fraction circles, bars, and squares.

Fractions Game Show: Category 5 – Comparing Fractions

Finally, students will have the opportunity to compare fractions using math models and numerical representations.

The absolute best part of this game is you don’t have to do any prep work! It’s a simple PowerPoint game you use in presentation mode.

Set up 3 teams of students and track their points on the Scoreboard page! Three navigation buttons make it easy to play this game:

• Answer – takes you to the answer slide
• Return – takes you back to the Jeopardy board
• Calculator – takes you to the Scoreboard
