## One Way I Use These Error Analysis Task Cards in Small Group Math Instruction

Using error analysis in small groups allows me to observe how my students solve math problem. First, I want to see that they know which math model to use. For example, will they use an array if it’s a multiplication problem?

In this place value problem, I can see how my student builds the number 733 using base ten blocks and then adds them to find the error.

In this example, I want to see my students draw the math model and determine that the task card problem contains the wrong answer, and they can prove it by using a math model.

## Extending the Practice with Math Writing

One way I like to extend this practice in small groups is to help students learn to explain in writing how they solved the problem and found the errors. Writing in math takes practice, and small groups are perfect for it. I can easily give feedback at the moment, and they can edit their responses right away.

In the beginning, I asked them to write down their problem-solving steps.

With practice, their responses get longer and more detailed.

Writing about their thinking helps them internalize their problem-solving steps and catch their errors.
