As a teacher, I want resources that are quick and easy to prep don’t you? I also want resources that work hard in my classroom and help my students master the reading standards. That’s why I LOVE this Wonders 3rd Grade Reading Response Bundle that is aligned to the McGraw Hill Reading Series! It’s full of text-dependent questions, graphic organizers, and opportunities for students to write about their reading!
When creating this bundle of reading response activities, I wanted to include rigorous and relevant questions that my students would respond to using text evidence. I don’t expect them to memorize the text, so I want them to know I expect that they will go back and find the answers (text evidence) to the questions I am asking.
If you need help teaching students how to cite text evidence – this post can really help !
After you read that post – grab this FREE student anchor chart!
Everything in this resource is built around that concept as well as a uniform layout for each week in all 6 units. This way my students can get to the important work of reading and comprehending text – not trying to figure out what to do.
What’s Included in this Wonders 3rd Grade Reading Response Bundle
* Reader Writer Workshop Text
The Reader Writer text is a shared reading experience so students will have a lot of support while reading this text. The teacher will help students understand the reading standard being applied and model how to fill out the graphic organizer.
- Half Page Graphic Organizer
- One Respond to Text Question
- One Work with Words Question
I love to use these questions as exit tickets or formative assessments after the lesson. It helps me understand who seems to understand the skill we are working on in each area. It’s perfect for determining small group needs!
This text is normally fairly long and will be used for multiple days of instruction and student response. Although the teacher will continue to give support – releasing to the students is the goal. Because the text is longer, there are more questions.
- Full Page Graphic Organizer
- Three Respond to Text Questions
- Three Work with Words Questions
Partnering or grouping students together to work on the first two questions is an effective way to give them support, but also time to use accountable talk strategies to further their understanding. The last question for both Respond to Text and Work with Words can again be used to assess individual mastery of the standards.
* Comparing Texts
This page takes advantage of the opportunity to compare the Anthology text and the Companion Text at the end of each week. At the beginning of the year, I like to model this several times so that students understand what the expectation is and what it should look like.
- Half Page Compare & Contrast Graphic Organizer
- Half Page Summary
Students will use the graphic organizer to jot down similarities and differences between the two texts. Then they will write a short summary paragraph explaining those similarities and differences using signal words/clue words.
So much goodness in these pages! Your students will be able to interact with the text and support their responses with text evidence! They will be able to compare texts using short summaries each week!
Week 6 – Research
Included in each unit is a page for research notes. These note-taking pages can easily be copied, so that students have plenty of space. They can then organize those notes and write an essay that explains their subject and what they have learned or complete a research project of your choosing.
Wonders 3rd Grade Reading Response Bundle – Digital Option
Everything that is listed above is included in the print and digital version which are both in the bundle pack!
You will love this Wonders 3rd Grade Reading Response Bundle so much! Here’s what teachers have told me:
“I love these resources for the Wonders curriculum. Who wants to reinvent the wheel in these stressful times? This has saved me so much time. I especially love that these go along with the shared read and the Anthology story.” – Tracy F.
My school adopted the Wonders series this school year. This bundle has been a lifesaver for me as I am adapting to the new curriculum. The questions included requiring the students to think deeply and use their text to look up the correct answers. The Venn Diagrams and summaries at the end of each week are beneficial for my students. I would highly recommend this resource to anyone! – Molly M.
