In search of Election Day activities for your 3rd or 4th-grade classroom? This printable and digital Election Day Close Reading Pack will help your students learn about Election Day facts and strengthen their close reading skills!

One of the instructional strategies I like to use with 3rd and 4th-grade students is to combine Social Studies content (like Elections) with reading skills.
What I love about this – you can use it as a reading lesson – BUT your students are learning valuable Civics content at the same time. Love this!
Plus – having both a printable and digital resource for this purpose helps in whatever teaching situation you are in at this time.

Before Reading Activities
As I was building this resource, I knew that teachers would want to give students ways to organize their thinking, so this resource begins with students beginning a KWL chart to establish their prior knowledge. Some of our students may know a lot about elections, and some may know very little. But either way – this will give them and you an idea of where they are starting from.

I then arm them with guiding questions to refer to during reading which helps them stay focused on the text content and what the author is trying to say:

The printable questions are the perfect size for each student to have a copy. In the digital version, the questions are listed on each page for quick reference.
